E3 Champion Strategies (S10)

This paper is based on the HR Strategy meeting held on 14th June 2001 and a preceding study of Executives in UK Financial Services.
The study found that stakeholder satisfaction with the business, internal satisfaction with employees and the HR function, and high performance, growth oriented strategies are associated with:
  • Integrated HR business strategies
  • E-world foresight
  • Employee capacity insights
  • E-HR solutions.

Performance is particularly enhanced when certain aspects of strategy are integrated horizontally and vertically to form what we have termed HR business strategy.

Horizontal strategy is accomplished through the integration of operations, HR and IT strategies. Vertical integration stems from the championing of E-world foresight, Employee commitment and capability, and E-HR solutions which release the hidden capacity of employees and the resource constraints on HR as a strategic function. Businesses that turn to this "E to the power of three" strategy will out-compete their sector according to this study. This requires a new kind of thinking by, and a new role for, HR.

The role of employee champion enables a virtuous spiral of related successes because it engenders trust and helps to ‘close the loop’ between the various business stakeholders, linking employee performance directly with business performance.
